This article is based on the dental equipment that Larry Cohen (Chairman of Benco Dental) has collected over the years. I can honestly say, a lot of the old equipment is actually pretty cool and quite terrifying. Some of the pieces in his collection are the reason people are scared shitless of the dentist. Thankfully, the Amalgamator wasn't that scary. Hopefully, I'll shoot one of the 1930's drill pieces sometime soon. Yikes.
Anyhow, Here's the product.
Not to terrifying, right? So this is circa 1950's, early 60's. When we were working on a concept for the shoot, our Senior Designer, Donna, had the idea of a robin's egg blue for the backdrop. Excellent choice for that 50's feel.
After some hunting at Joanne Fabrics, I managed to find this awesome blue fabric. Perfect for a 50's curtain, 90's prom dress or the backdrop for an Amalgamator. Those are the ONLY 3 things.
After some quick quick scissor action, the fabric laid perfect on the quick table setup we had. Also with an addition of a small hair light on the product.
The final set up was two Canon 430EX II hitting either side of the machine at about 1/8th power and a 580EX II as the hair light around 1/64th.
Also, please appreciate the mess of a studio in the background the entire time. We've got a lot going on.
Here's the final shot of the product:
The hair light brought that perfect amount of orange light inside the plastic casing. The background also makes the tannish yellow color of the machine really pop.
That was a fun day.
